Sarah Kreiger was born on Haystack Mountain in Appalachia. As a kid, she went fishing and swimming in Lake Habeeb now and then. But she was an indoor cat, so she spent most of her time inside watching TV, reading, and making things with paper and string and glue. At school, no one ever talked about art or music or culture, because these are secular things that only lead to trouble. Mostly everyone prayed all the time and talked about what's wrong with the world. Sarah went to college in the Blue Ridge Mountains and had her first art class. She learned how to paint and draw and make prints. And she took classes where pictures of artworks were projected on a screen twenty feet high. Sarah sat in the dark classroom and looked at the big projections, and saw what she had been missing and thought about all the things she wanted to make. After college, Sarah came down from the mountains and moved to New York City for graduate school. It took a lot of gumption, but she adapted to life in the city, and before she knew it, she had an MFA. Now Sarah lives in Rochester, NY. She has a little place called Down North that she shares with her roommate, a half-bear half-poet who loves to dance and drink good gin. Sarah Kreiger specializes in making a lot out of a little. She works primarily with paper, making prints, collages, books, sculptural pieces, and sometimes installations.
