Collage: Found Objects on Paper and Plastic.
"Griddy" is part of a series of work wherein I borrow from two influential artists to my practice of collage (in this case Mimo Rotella & Sol LeWitt) and compress their styles together in the hopes that the fusion creates an interesting lense in which to view the initial ingredients. In Griddy I explore how the Decollage process of stripping and tearing away interfaces with Mr. LeWitt's building block, process oriented style. My hope was to find an interesting intersection between a precision, grid oriented composition and a more visceral, laceration and somewhat more unpredictable effect of tearing composition. In utilising both approaches I wanted to maintain an intriguing push/pull between foreground and background composition- as that is an aspect (on a purely optical level) that I find quit pleasing about some of Rotella and LeWitt's work. The collage consists of notes from my various passages in daily life in NYC and color aid cards from a color theory class I had in my undergraduate studies in art. My intent was to merge academic studies detritus with that of atifices from the real world of living.
