LaSalle Street Looking South I describe this image, created in early fall of 1989, as a "close-up wide-angle view" of a section of LaSalle Street in the heart of Chicago's financial district. Only one lens, a 500mm f8 Nikkor mirror reflex, was used to produce the more than 300 individual photos that make up this scene. Viewers can approach the image two ways. While standing back, one observes a busy street scene with the city's vitality evident everywhere. When viewed close-up, extreme details of all elements are rendered clearly. There is no graininess whatsoever. By using a telephoto instead of a wide angle lens beautiful, intricate architectural details are revealed that are normally overlooked or unavailable for view from any angle on the street. The section of LaSalle Street shown here is not as wide as my image implies. It is only one lane in each direction plus parking lanes. The openness of the scene is a result of my standing at the extreme right side of LaSalle Street to shoot buildings on my left and vice versa. I always envisioned a massive traffic jam and large crowds for this project. Therefore, "opening" the "canyon" section of LaSalle Street lent itself perfectly to my idea. The people and traffic were shot at different times and added after the buildings were all in place. Thirty rolls of film were shot and ten visits to the street were required to generate all the elements included in this image. Direct sun, open shade, and total cloudiness were employed to best render different details of the scene. For example; the Board of Trade building, in the center of the picture, is lit directly by a pink/orange sun rising at 7:00AM and shining straight down Jackson Blvd. The Rookery Building, dark, relatively short with spires on top and to the left of the Board of Trade as the picture is viewed, was lit by open shade on a clear day. The large dark building at the extreme left was photographed mid-morning on a cloudy day to best reveal its details. Across the street at the extreme right, the blue portion of the corner building was shot in late afternoon on a cloudy day while its elaborate, columned facade was better rendered in direct sunlight between 11:30 and noon. The Northern Trust Bank was photographed in shade from its columns up. but the ground floor, the flowers at the base of the columns, and the globes of the old-fashioned street lights in front of the building "popped" better in direct sun. Most of the flags on the street snapped out better when backlit too. The scraps of sky were photographed during many shooting sessions in the area and are montaged together.

I was a street photographer responding to lines, color, people and places long before I realized what I was doing or how it influenced the direction my life would take. Grew up on the original black & white LIFE magazine, eager for its arrival every Thursday, instantly studying all the photos. That is where my concept of photography formed and where my desire grew to become a photographer. I worked in other industries yet nothing satisfied me as much or meant as much as taking - making - pictures. I have been a self-taught freelance photographer for almost 40 years. I create original photo art - fine art images - sold from my studio, my web site and through a few select online galleries. Commercially, I shoot environmental portraits, photograph events, and develop documentary projects for a variety of nonprofits, corporate clients, and government agencies. I work as a partner with clients, helping them to maximize the strategic power of pictures. My images are used for PR, communications, image building, income development, and marketing.
