I start this process by making my own paper. I cut up used cotton t-shirts or linen (must be plant based to bond)and beat the fiber to a pulp with a machine called a Hollander beater. Each sheet is hand pulled, pressed, and dried. I then use my paper in all my collages. The pieces are machine stitched together and an image from a vintage magazine is added. Most of the images come from women's magazines from the 50s. These magazines are so sexist! So, I love writing a new empowering narrative for the women in my pieces. A lot of the pieces are heavily influenced by actual events in my own life.
