ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependency on initial conditions in which a small change at one place in a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state. The name of the effect, coined by Edward Lorenz, is derived from the theoretical example of a hurricanes formation being contingent on whether or not a distant butterfly had flapped its wings several weeks earlier. Although the butterfly effect may appear to be an esoteric and unlikely behavior, it is exhibited by very simple systems. For example, a ball placed at the crest of a hill may roll into any surrounding valley depending on, among other things, slight differences in its initial position. The butterfly effect is a common trope in fiction, especially in scenarios involving time travel. Additionally, works of fiction that involve points at which the storyline diverges during a seemingly minor event, resulting in a significantly different outcome than would have occurred without the divergence, are an example of the butterfly effect. (Wikipedia) I arbitrarily decided that there is no reason that it wasn't this phenomena that caused Mars to become a dustbowl world, apart from whatever slammed in it :-) I started by painting with acrylics and built up the mountains and hills with various art papers and fabrics. I then added shards of fossil rocks and decorative stones, natural pebbles and used beaded pearls to make it even more surreal. I used metal leaf to limn the rocks facing the supposed sunrise and finally added the brass butterfly which was made and gifted to me by J. Carlin.

I was born in South Africa and then studied for at Rhodes University under professor Brian Bradshaw. I lived in Northwestern British Columbia, Canada for 9 years. and during that time opened an art gallery (with gift shop), and a working studio where I painted and taught people to do the same. Although being a landscape painter using pastel has been a lifelong love, I now explore other media in an effort to express my strong thoughts and emotions\ . This has been a voyage of discovery where I have found new dimensions I was only able to dream of in the past. Please note that ALL of my images (C.N.
