The architectures of art became the content of cycles of formally different but conceptually related projects. In 2010, I began to paint the people inside the museums. Initially intended as a compositional tool for the empty interiors, Visitor Cutouts (oil on paper or linen on foam core) quickly developed into an independent resource combined with or detached from the museum context from which they came. I began this series of small watercolors with cutout figures to allow me to play with the narrative more, sometimes following the original photo based image and sometimes letting the story tell itself differently. The hanging or collaged figures stand out from the background emphasizing the parts of the whole before they return to their place within the story. Thus the best way to frame these works is a shadow box that lets the figures sway slightly and appear as detached.
