Metamorphic Storm from the Pacific Northwest Collage

One in a series of collected rainstorms and rocks from the places in which I have lived – the high peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the rolling planes of the American Midwest, the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest. This mixed media painting features a 3-dimensional raised cloud motif composed of custom marbled paper collage and an inky wash of abstract rain drips in multiple shades of brown, gold and turquoise. The exposed woodgrain background is Reclaimed 1/4" birch plywood. Another 1/4" piece of plywood mounted on the back allows the artwork to "float" off the wall and cast a shadow. The entire surface is finished under a cloudy layer of encaustic wax. Encaustic art involves fusing heated beeswax and damar resin on the surface of the substrate. The results are a soft, barely opaque, molten surface full of nuance and character that catches the light. ⁣Care for an encaustic painting as you would any fine art painting.
