About The Artwork

In my search for colors and textures, I looked down on my feet and I created a new series I named "Nid-de-Poule." Nid-de-poule, has a double meaning in French: it literally means “hen’s nest,” but it is also used to mean “pothole,” as in those attributes of so many New York City streets. I was pregnant when I was taking pictures of painted pavements in New York. This physical change made me look down at my feet more frequently, and I discovered to my great surprise the beauty and the richness of the painted parts of the streets. The sculptural round shape of the artworks reminds me the two meanings put together. Pregnancy is beautiful but it is a long road until delivery, with lots of changes but also difficulties both mentally and physically—you have to make so many adjustments in your life. My Nid-de-poule collages reveal all that: the nest, the beauty and the danger of carrying a new life that may arise from the process of just living one’s life.

Originally from France, Capucine Bourcart has called Harlem her home for the past 13 years. With Vietnamese origins and growing up in Alsace (the Germanic region of Eastern France), her multicultural background has led to her curiosity and inspired her creations. As a mirror of human diversity, she has acquainted herself with different cultures by living abroad and travelling the world. Her collage technique strongly conveys her mixed origins by using cutting, layering, stitching, etc. She is fascinated by details, colors, and textures and is inspired by personal interactions, social issues, and both urban and natural landscapes. She structures her creative process with visual fragments and themes that she collects in her daily life, travels, and relationships. There is also humor in her work, to create distance and enhance the impact of the chosen theme. Primarily self-taught in photography she has refined her skills through classes at the International Center of Photography in New York, where she was also an Assistant Teacher. Her work has been exhibited at and purchased by private collectors and museums in Europe and in New York. She was an award-winning artist at FLUX Public Art Projects in 2016 and received the UNIQLO Park Expressions Grand in 2017.
