About The Artwork

This is one installment within the “Found Object As Poem” Series, which features objects found, bartered or traded during my travels. Shown here are four handmade artifacts, prayer beads from the faith traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. The Tibetan mala features individually hand-painted “Om” beads, while the rudraksha beads are strung in 24-carat gold. The antique rosary is made of Spina Christi beads, the seeds from a thorny plant thought to be what the Crown of Thorns was made of. The misbaha comprises 99 beads, each made from the wood of a different tree in the forests of Borneo. Each artifact has an accompanying poem, written for it or around it. “To pray is in religion,” Novalis wrote, “what to think is in philosophy.” This on-going project of penning original poems based on found objects explores the idea of the gift economy, almost a century after anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski first discovered and described the Kula Ring, or Kula ceremonial exchange system, practiced by the Trobriand Islanders. Each of the four artifacts and poem may be purchased on its own at USD18,000.
