Transcriptive mixed media painting of Sir Anthony Van Dyck's 1640 portrait of Philadelphia and Elizabeth Wharton. This is a reappropriation of a baroque family portrait, of children who once existed neary 400 years ago. The work questions time and social status, reviving art historical figures to contemporary times through paint and contemporary urban collage, exploring meaning through our ancestry and the barrage of images we are bombarded with daily. The work has particularly been inspired by Japanese street style. Framing information: All my works are sealed with matt varnish and set in a bespoke premium frame. Works are framed upon purchase, to enable the collector to select either a heavy black frame, or a more contemporary deep profile white frame with broad mount. Please see images provided - all frames are handmade, of premium quality with an archival framer, and made to order. Sizes White frame and mount 46 x 52 x 5cm Black frame 36 x 42 x 5cm Image: 27 x 20cm.

British painter + collage maker (PhD), and one of the few British artists to be selected for the Brooklyn Museum's artabase (New York). Gorrill's new work reappropriates and revives the art historical female form through paint; and imagery taken from popular culture, Instagram and adult magazines. The artist draws meaning from the barrage of images we are bombarded with in our daily existence, blending art history and the passage of time with the Urban and Contemporary Cool. Through activist painterly vandalism and re-drawing of the old masters, a series of new modern mistresses emerge.
