Artist Statement Milt Masur I am a retired physician enlarging my life with a career in art. I am no longer young but I am tapping what Betty Friedan called "The Fountain of Age." I believe that older people have an enormous potential for productive living as they engage in what the psychologist Erik Erikson described as the central issue of life, generativity, the passing on of the torch, pitted against stagnation. I think that creativity is a physiological part of human nature; it is instinctual as Denis Dutton so well describes. Creativity constantly re-shapes our perception of our outer environment, interacting with our inner selves. Of the many forms of creation, visual art has the advantage of uniting these interactions by capturing a meaningful moment in time, as I try to do with my paintings. After years of sculpting and painting, my art evolved into combining both these two and sometimes adding collage elements: I paint figurative bas reliefs with impressionistic techniques and an occasional bow to abstraction. The effect is to delineate and empower the subject; the third dimension adds a palpable sense of identity and the addition of color, adds nuance and mood and sometimes a sense of excitement or wonder. My favorite subjects are scenes of nature and portraits of people. My years as a physician bend my perception towards a humanistic ethos. Self-discovery is OK but not solipsism which is a kind of self-verification with little objectivity.
