Solo 2 Collage

This original small art quilt is part of a series entitled "Solo." The piece features an abstracted image of an ancient piece of pottery, standing tall and vibrant in its detailed setting. I have long worked with pottery forms and see them as metaphors for the human figure, and love exploring the ways this image can be used in a variety of contexts and with differing embellishment materials. I began with a mixed media paper collage on canvas. The image was then edited digitally for expressive effect and printed on fabric, after which it was machine quilted to make it a sturdy object. Next it was very heavily embellished by hand with fibers and beads, bringing each inch to life with reflective texture and making this print a one-of-a-kind object. An ancient artifact, updated. This piece features glass, ceramic, stone, pearl, and wood beads. The machine stitching is a drawing superimposed over the original collage image. The hand stitching contains cotton and metallic fibers. There are painted details. The edge is trimmed with Nepalese raw silk and the piece has a beaded edge. Creating this work is a form of meditation and healing for me, and I hope the viewer enjoys the tactile nature of the art and can appreciate the hours and energy contained within it. It is meant to hang on a wall, framed or unframed, and comes with a simple hanging device tied to the back. It is meant to look handmade, and has irregular shape akin to traditional and historical textiles I love from the Mediterranean world, such as fragments of Coptic weaving or Turkish carpets. The surface has a glittery, rich texture, making it truly "jewelry for your wall."
