About The Artwork

My work reflects an ongoing exploration into the aesthetics of using language in art. While most conceptual artists incorporate text into their work as a means of analyzing popular culture or for making political and social commentary, I am more intrigued with developing text as a visual design element. I am particularly inspired by Asian art and have studied the intricate calligraphy used to decorate ancient scrolls and screens. The columns of simple, yet elegant characters may express specific meanings, but a viewer is not required to understand that meaning in order to appreciate the grace and integrity of the artwork. I create mixed media pieces and steel sculptures which incorporate my own automatic, abstract writing. Most of my assemblages are created using Thai papers, delicate hand or machine-made papers which incorporate imbedded bits of wood, leaves, petals and stems. I work with the papers in a way which allows the natural elements to float across the surface of my images, creating unpredictable and assymetrical patterns.

Heidi Lewis Coleman is an abstract artist whose Dreamscape Series reflects an exploration of imaginary landscapes inspired by the ancient lands of mythology and cultural lore, whether historical, fictional or fantastical. The shapes she paints and combines in her artwork are organic, thus referring to all forms of nature. The artist creates her acrylic and cut paper pieces using Thai Kozo paper: a delicate, translucent tissue which is made from Kozo fiber. This paper incorporates imbedded bits of bark, leaves, petals and stems - natural elements which create texture and movement as they float across the surface of the artist’s abstract assemblage pieces. Coleman studied art at Parsons and the New York School of Design, where she graduated with highest honors. Her artwork has been included in several private collections. She is a juried member of the National Association of Women Artists, the Women’s Caucus for Art and the Silvermine Guild of Artists. Coleman is an award winning artist who has exhibited widely in galleries and museums across the country, including the Mattatuck Museum, the Hammond Museum and the Katonah Museum of Art.
