As a result of climate change the Earth had gotten smaller. No one had noticed at first; things were really fucked up what with the "plague of rashes and inexplicable abrasions" so everyone was too distracted (and itchy) to note a planetary shrinkage in their immediate area. In fact it was the folks living on the great plains of the world who started to sense the alterations first. In the U.S. farmers in Kansas conferred that their horizons, usually as straight as a plumb line, had begun to arc. In Europe fisherman on the Bay of Biscay saw the distance curve downward away from the center like the boney prominence of God's chin. Chicken Little (much bigger now) had switched his hysterical cry from "the sky is falling!" to "the sky is bending!" but alas even in the best circumstances few listen to histrionic chickens so the warning fell on indifferent ears. Still the Earth shrank and shrank until it was about the size of a globe you'd find in your school library. Unfortunately Earth's inhabitants did not shrink exponentially so eventually Earth got so crowded it looked like a herd of giants rioting on a cantaloupe. Postscript: This is all entirely true. For my 40th birthday I had my tongue gold plated and since then I cannot tell a lie or taste cheese.
