Since I was a small child, I have always been fascinated by science-fiction films, comic books, books and art. I think that I discovered Van Gogh when I was about five years old: the wife of a family friend had artistic ambitions during her bohemian years as a university student and she was working on a copy of the 'Sunflowers' by Vincent Van Gogh. I thought that this famous painting would offer an exceptionally dramatic background for this collage: a colourful painting of a still life subject contrasting with a black and white photo of two men fighting with and alien. I also felt that there was something alien about the sunflowers, which seem to interact with the black and white image with their spiky petals and leaves, their stalks resembling long necks and their flower heads looking like menacing giant eyes. I took the photo from a science fiction movies book published in 1979 which I bought from a charity shop. The image is from a film called 'Journey to the Seventh Planet' from 1961. The matt black and white image has been cut by hand using my favourite Swann-Morton scalpel handle and blades then glued onto a slightly satin reproduction of the 'Sunflowers'. The exact size in centimetres is 22.3 x 29.9 x 0.1. Signed and dated at the back.

Instagram: @domiku.domikaze I have been a creative person since as far back as my memory can take me… As a small child, although I could not put it into words, I was aware of having a sensibility towards usually small, detailed, beautiful and natural things whether animate or inanimate. I have always been curious and fascinated about art and nature, about patterns and textures, colours and shapes, about insects, plants, wood and stones and all that translated into an early interest in anything artistic: first by taking up drawing and painting and later through a free exploration of collage, mixed media and printing. I define myself as a ‘collage artist, second-hand shop explorer, skip scavenger and finder of things’ who likes being inspired by other creative people whether they define themselves as artists, makers, artisans or creators. I find inspiration in Islamic, Japanese, Chinese and Persian arts, crafts and calligraphy, in geometric and abstract art, arte povera, pop art, comics, science fiction, typography, graphic design and advertising before computers, furniture and packaging design and in avant-garde movements like dadaism, surrealism, cubism, futurism and suprematism to name a few. In addition to this, I also find inspiration in found, misplaced and de-contextualized objects. My mission as an artist is not just to create beautiful artworks aesthetically pleasing but also to be thought-provoking and irreverent through playfulness.
