About The Artwork

This series of paintings was inspired by the lyric dance entitled Summerspace choreographed by Merce Cunningham with stage décor by Robert Rauschenberg and first performed in 1958. The New York Ballet writes that the dance is imbued with fluid angularity, presenting contemporary whimsy. Cunningham is often described as acting on impulse and the ten paintings in my Summerspace series attempt to unrehearsedly surprise. Summerspace #2 is painted in acrylic on unstretched canvas with a collage of dancers created with modeling paste. TOTAL CANVAS SIZE unstretched: 29.7 cm x 41cm (11.7 inch x 16.1 inch). PAINTING SIZE about 25 cm x 35 cm (9.8 inch x 13.7inch). Shipping will be UNSTRETCHED and rolled in a tube. This painting is dated and signed on the back.

Dr. Beth Erez, a mixed media artist, specializes in the integration and amalgamation of materials – often combining found objects and those invented in her imagination. She utilizes clay, wood, wax, metal, glass, shredded paper, epoxy resin and whatever is found in closets, on shelves and in her basement to create a series of complex transformative artworks containing elements of technology, nature, everyday objects and those reminiscent of childhood. Erez exams “the spirit" of the materials – constantly scrutinizing the boundaries between the real and the imaginary, from the rational to the metaphysical. Her creations reflect curiosity and sensitivity, testing boundaries, crafting an atmosphere of change – change in form, change over time, change in technology. In her photography, Erez takes inspiration from the patterns of natural forms and man-made elements exploring and experimenting with detail and color while analyzing the harmonies and disharmonies created thereby. Dr. Beth Erez was born in New York City and immigrated to Israel in 1977. She began sculpting in 2001.
