About The Artwork

Infiltrating the origins of Cubism and collage, I wanted to produce an imaginary dance off between a ballerina and her reflection. Distorted within modular cubes their bodies dissolve and duplicate as if Muybridge’s movement camera has caught them about to perform the dance of the whirling dervish. The Cubist Epoch weaves the past and present together as one, dissolving and expanding the original narrative by entering a pocket in time the author has not signed. A dancer creates art in the present time, in the space of the now. Immediacy is the activity, striving towards the finale of the performance. This immediacy and passion for the present moment of movement is paralleled by the stillness of the photograph, the stealing/protecting/capturing of the present time for preservation. The image for the Cubist Epoch was taken in 1910, in a studio prior to a performance by the Ballets Russes. In a different studio around the same time Picasso and Braque were conceiving cubism and creating collages, all unsigned and undated between 1907-1914, creating for me, a pocket in time to infiltrate for inspiration.

Taking ownership of images from the past through the act of collage, my work establishes relationships and connections between the existence of one image and it's marriage with another. Photographs duplicated, cut up, divided and re-assembled like a jigsaw puzzle allow me to intervene with the authority of the original in order to create fresh readings born from the disruption of existing signs. www.claire-pestaille.co.uk www.facebook.com/claire.pestaille www.twitter.com/ClairePestaille www.paulstolpergallery.com www.5piecesgallery.com
