I lived in Mexico City for over a year and during that time (in the 1990s) I wanted to learn colloquial Mexican Spanish. So I bought what everyone else there seemed to be reading - 1 peso comics sold in their 1000s from the news stands on every street corner and metro stop. I was angry to find these comic novellas full of sexist, racist stories that reinforced stereotypes and western cliches of behaviour. Husbands cheat on their wives with irresistible (younger, more sexy) women, but are found out and ultimately forgiven by their (loving, good Catholic) spouse. Somewhat annoyed, I brought some comics back with me and in the studio proceeded to tear them into pieces. Then, I carefully stitched them back together to show titillating excerpts from the stories - like a film trailer. The format has echoes of illuminated manuscripts, working these cheap paper trash novellas with care. The threads that bind them together are as colourful and vibrant as the stories themselves, but the content is still dubious, uncomfortably freeze-framed, locked on this mega-page. This is one of a series of four pages. Available unframed as priced or framed in a deep box frame under non-reflective glass.

Lent Installation Artist Southwark Cathedral, London - Part of Becket 2020. Artist-in-residence St Thomas Way, Hereford Cathedral 2018-20. Mappa Mundi - Medieval pilgrimage, pathways & labyrinths. I would love to continue to make work in historic cultural spaces. My work is full of reworked maps, pathways and repetitive fragments pieced back together, often structured in grids and with many layers, attempting to make sense of 'where?' - a tactile filtering process. Re-constructing. Re-thinking. Also walking as part of making, and mapping where we'd been - taking 'artwalks' with people, getting 'lost' on purpose.
