About The Artwork

Since you touched me, since your smile hit my soul, I lost control over my wings. Wherever I want to go, I'll always find myself flying back to you. Freedom is a fragile concept when it is confronted with love... This collage is inspired by the opera "Die Frau ohne Schatten"/ "The Woman without a Shadow" by Richard Strauss, in which I see the conflict between the desire for freedom and the desire for love. Imagine trying to touch the woman in the collage…imagine how you like the bird, a part of who she is…imagine how you would not want to make it fly away…is she asking you to be careful? Is she daring you to come closer? Or imagine being her. Knowing that, what you want will make you vulnerable, even wanting it already makes you vulnerable. But isn't this risk, what makes it so exciting?

Lara Minerva, born in 1992, is a Berlin-based artist with a bi-national and bi-cultural German-Greek background. She graduated with a master’s degree in psychology from the „Freie Universität Berlin“. Her interest in the human psyche clearly shows in her collage work, as her collages often revolve around emotions, inner conflicts and interpersonal relationships. Intimacy is an important subject for the artist, which she describes as a moment of honesty between two or more people, where they take off their masks and show their true selves. This concept of honesty and vulnerability shows in the use of nudity in Minerva’s collages. The combination of the naked subjects with symbolic images of plants, birds or landscape cause associations in the viewer and often touch the viewer on a deeper level. Lara’s collages appear in numerous private collections in Europe and the USA. Her work has been exhibited in Berlin, London and New York City.
