Artist: Ernanet Muijskens Living and working in Harlingen, The Netherlands. .................................................................... 'Making the worthless worthwhile' ................................................................... Artworks made of waste, plastic soup washed ashore, which I collect on the beach and the sea dyke nearby where I am living. Waste=Art. Trash becomes treasure. ................................................................... Apart from the obvious benefit of her work (the clean-up of the beach and the attention it generates for the problem of plastic-soup) it particularly reflects the dislike of the artist towards the clichés of the public. A piece is only approved of when it looks as ‘stupid’ and awkward as possible. This artist is only happy when she can qualify a satisfactory work of art as a ‘guaranteed non seller’. ............................................................................ Her relation with the public is ambivalent: ‘I make art that nobody wants’ is how she points out her work herself. On the other hand she hopes to share the appeal and endearing feelings for the little trasures made out of junk, making the worthless worthwhile. ............................................................................. She expects a buyer to look beyond judgements like beautiful/ugly, too big/too small, easy/complex, artisanal/experimental. Working with materials that have been discarded as well as condemned by the public and bleached and battered by the sea, provides these pieces of art with an indispensable dimension. The artist returns waste in a transformed state to its debtors, the public.
