During a trip to Myanmar we visited Inle Lake which is surrounded by villages on stilts. This reminded me of one of my earliest paintings done at Trinity College Glenalmond of houses on bamboo poles. These houses on stilts offer protection from rising water, marauding animals, and human enemies. At the abandoned military base at Orford Ness in Suffolk, there are several observation towers from which test bombing runs were monitored. In Holt, Norfolk, I saw some pottery which had little cottages mounted on long spindly metal legs. All these references combine in the image of once-imposing, now-ruined towers, undermined over time by irrelevance and the elements, and left to decay. These fragile, unstable little towers symbolise the transient nature of human structures. They are made from distressed black wet & dry sandpaper glued onto thin metal wire. This sandpaper is used by artist Jane Price in creating her paintings which are done with layers of acrylics and embroidered fabric. These paintings are based upon maps, primarily of places with which she has an affinity for or memories of. She donates the remains to me once she's finished with them. As a result they carry with them the marks and memory of her work.
