About The Artwork

This piece belongs to a series of moon representations. It is a mixed media/collage on canvas and it measures 24x18x2 inch. The title "Trashy-Moon with Butterfly" is because the piece is 100% trash. It is made of plastic materials such as a plastic plate with flowers, petals, and little branches stuck on, that I recovered after using it, and a plastic sheet, dirty with colors, used to cover the work table. I also used black acrylic for the background and white acrylic for the dripping at the bottom of the canvas. The title "Trashy-Moon with Butterfly" is because I am a moon and a butterfly lover and I tried to reinvent them by using whatever material I have. I like looking at the moon in the black sky and imagine that it turns so bright 'cause of the reflections in the atmosphere. And actually, this trash plate was so bright that I felt it could represent a very beautiful full moon. Working with leftovers of every kind brings me to reimagine a possible new meaning and life for them. When I look at discarded materials I can see a new landscape. It's like a window open to another reality. I'm constantly inspired by random materials I find around my studio or outside my surrounding, such as dirty plates used to mix colors, plastic sheets used for covering tables, pieces of broken objects. The more they are worn and dirty the more they acquire elegance on the canvas. This is pretty exciting for me. As always, I'm using the waste in my studio. I feel a beneficiary, not a giver. My benefits are whatever material, object, and leftover that I find around. They are the protagonist of my art, the survivors of the environment annihilation, the heroes who tell their stories. They fuel my creativity, leading me to carry out their will.

My life began in Italy, in a small town nestled between the sea and the mountains. "Teate Degli Abruzzi", meaning, the "Land of Shepherds", is a wild and archaic territory where I spent most of my youth in close contact with the surrounding nature. My parents always told me that I began creating before I started talking. Indeed, some of my earliest memories are of days spent entirely gathering, reimagining, and crafting life from discarded things. Over the years, I have utilized the unique nature and dynamics of a multitude of materials – whether organic, inorganic, or synthetic – morphing them into new imagery and imbuing them with a new identity. Materials speak to me aloud. Despite their imperfections, rawness, and precariousness, they contain forces beyond our control in a continuous fluctuation between ephemerality and resilience. To this day, exploring the surroundings and gathering whatever inspires me is still the core of my practice. My process is led by a feeling of the transience of life which I strive to rehabilitate into a timeless dimension. I have exhibited extensively in Italy, Europe, and the US with critical acclaim since 1990. I've been living in the United States since 2015 working with numerous galleries across the country. I continue to investigate mixed media techniques as vehicles to embody my experiences and my vision of life.
