This mixed media collage/painting is made of acrylic, book pages, and melted/fused plastic bags (gathered in London) on a recycled wood board. The use of mass-produced plastics in the work refers back to the traditional art of collage that boomed in the 20th century, while questioning the relationship the artist and viewer have to substances in today's world. It is an expression and questioning of urban living through the re-purposing of materials it generates, in an attempt to reconnect with these materials, with things overlooked even when tangible and physically present in an ever-pervasive way in modern life. The book pages come from a novel published in 1984 in Tokyo, another type of found object the artist likes to experiment with. The paper cut-outs spell "we are bodies" underneath the paint. The subtle shape of the text is only visible to the observant eye and is a nod to a phrase spoken by philosopher Slavoj Zizek during a lecture, remanipulated here to refer to the physicality of our relationship with the (over-)produced and the (over-)consumed.
