About The Artwork

First and foremost this piece is not a "celebration of diversity." It is a callout of a form of racism and anti-blackness that currently exists within or modern day. It features white faces with black eyes and black lips to showcase the constant appropriation of black/POC features, on or off media. It features a white woman with the mouth of a POC to showcase the idea that the same stories told by a person of color will be listened to so long as the speaker has a white face. The background featuring the white side is magazine meaning it's new and modern or popular. The background featuring the black side is newspaper signifying old or out of fashion. The magazine background is covering the newspaper, almost like the magazine side is taking over the newspaper side. It's to contrast showing the newer much more modern takeover what's old or out of style, but still beautiful. The black women on the magazine side are the "exception." They are accepted on the magazine side because their features are uncommon or "exotic" or that their hair is long so that means they're beautiful.
