About The Artwork

In my current body of work, “poetics of the object”, I am keen on the aesthetics of the art of letter writing, and the use of calligraphy-beautiful handwriting, juxtaposing it with modern communication methods that use text or type to express oneself; text messaging, email and letters, advertisements, etc… In this body of work, I ask myself questions like, what constitutes art, and was letter writing an art? To mention art is to conjure painting, sculpture, jewelry, etc… While we are now quick to recognize in such objects, the qualities of high art, could it be that we were hasty in treating the arts that were used for personal use as humble relations, or have not been quick enough to see in them the same formal invention and fantasy? Can I have overlooked in the art of letter writing, for example, another manifestation of the same creative spirit at work, same technical abilities, and seen them only, or mainly, as evidences of social intercourse- communication? If this is so, and to the degree that it is only so, “poetics of the object; beauty by design”, will, I hope, suggest and illustrate a new avenue of approach.

Biography Patrick N Karanja is a dynamic artist exploring different media in fine arts. He trained in His work is an attempt at depicting the different issues that impact on his practice and or society, and at times the world as a whole. These issues could be social, political or both, depending on the specific concerns at the given time; therefore he has never been keen on looking for his own signature style, but rather techniques and media that serve the desired functions. Born in Nairobi in 1990, he graduated with a degree in industrial design and fine arts of St Lawrence University, Kampala, Uganda, in 2013. He is a voracious reader of whatever educational literature he puts his hands on. He is slowly creating a niche for himself in the art scene.
