ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work is one of a series that explores the colour and form of the visible world through repetition and modulation. The idea behind the series was inspired by the colour experiments of Josef Albers. This is an original iPad painting printed with archival inks on Hahnemuhler photorag 300gsm paper. The print size is 36 x 36 cm, the paper size is 44 x 44 cm. The work is from a long-term project. Some time ago I heard that Josef Albers in his decades-long homage to the square never mixed any of the colours he used, preferring to collect paints from all over the world and use them as they came, straight from the tube. I heard this with a great sense of emancipation, and I decided to explore in a similar way the digital colours available in the palettes of iOS Brushes in my sacred mountain and constructivist series. This is a durational project: I'll try it for ten years and see where it leads. Other artists have been intrigued and have asked if I apply formal concepts or rules when selecting colours, like selecting colours whose components are prime numbers. I respond that am allowing a collision between formalism and improvisation in my choices of colours and I am finding a new discipline to enact. I am attracted by zombie formalism as a source concept, echoing the way in which the Fauves gladly embraced a derogatory and dismissive term and made it a virtue.

My pictures are often intensely coloured and use more-or-less recogniseable images – geometric forms, portraits, landscapes, interiors, still life, imagery from popular and high culture - but rendered and juxtaposed in such a way as to defamiliarize the subjects. They are part of a long series of reflections on the nature of picture-making. These are interconnected works and in them I try to take account of the history of meaning and form in visual art and my purpose is to see how these can be reimagined using contemporary processes in an art world now without movements or consensus. I am particularly concerned with how visual representation can highlight mythology and social change. In the last two years I have been moving towards printmaking and working with combinations of analogue and digital methods. I have begun to incorporate painting and photography, particularly photomontage into my pictures and to work with digital printers to create works on paper. What I used to think of as a painting I now see as a temporary halt in a process.
