About The Artwork

As someone with autism, one of the things I have always struggled with is knowing what social norms I should be following. There are times, however, when it's obvious I need to pull out all the stops. When job interviews or formal events come around, I dig into my special box of behaviors. To me, these are special masks painstakingly built for times I need to put myself on display.

Natalia was born in England but moved to the United States when she was a young child. From her early days, she struggled growing up as an autistic person in the 1980s, when barely anyone knew what autism even was. She has always had a passion for art, but it wasn’t until later in life that she discovered digital art. She started experimenting with different programs, and with time and determination, she was able to refine her technique and create her own unique style. Through her artwork, she explores what it is to live with the challenges of autism. Bright colors, expressive brush strokes, and large, bold shapes express the often overwhelming nature of the everyday world. Her work takes you into her world where who you are is not generally accepted. She looks at the masks she wears, and those worn by the people around her and society as a whole. "On some level, none of us can escape the need for masking. While autistic people do it much more consciously, everyone puts on a different face for different pieces of their lives. Some of these masks are as simple as minding manners or using more formal language. Others are intricate and completely hide our true selves. These masks we wear can end up twisted and distorted, and our own truth can morph and decay. " Natalia's work has appeared in several Denver Metro Area galleries.
