ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Yoruba culture of Nigeria considers the human head the most vital part of a person. The size and elaborate finishing of the head of traditional Yoruba figure sculptures speak to the importance ascribed to this part of the human anatomy. “The prominence given to the head in Yoruba culture is based on the physical and metaphysical but a higher value is based on the metaphysical as It is said to be the site of a person’s essential nature (Iwa) and their life force (Ase)” (Lawal 1985) At the physical level, the head is considered a shell (Ori Ode) that houses the metaphysical head or Inner head (Ori Inu), which is connected through the life force to Olodumare (Creator of existence)

Atinuke Osibogun-Adeleke, based in Frisco, Texas, is an interdisciplinary artist whose creative process serves as a means to confront and resolve internal conflicts. Inspired by the interplay between past and present, traditional cultural customs, and modern processes, she navigates the complexities of her Nigerian and Colonial/Western heritage. In her artistic practice, Atinuke pays tribute to her Yoruba roots while actively redefining and exploring the hybridity born from cross-cultural influences prevalent in contemporary society. Her work integrates a diverse array of objects and materials, including jewelry, sculpture, wood, metal, and fiber, reflecting the multicultural landscape of her existence and the dynamic interrelationship between Nigeria and the West.
