About The Artwork

The Yoruba culture of Nigeria considers the human head the most vital part of a person. The size and elaborate finishing of the head of traditional Yoruba figure sculptures speak to the importance ascribed to this part of the human anatomy. “The prominence given to the head in Yoruba culture is based on the physical and metaphysical but a higher value is based on the metaphysical as It is said to be the site of a person’s essential nature (Iwa) and their life force (Ase)” (Lawal 1985) At the physical level, the head is considered a shell (Ori Ode) that houses the metaphysical head or Inner head (Ori Inu), which is connected through the life force to Olodumare (Creator of existence)

Atinuke Osibogun-Adeleke is an interdisciplinary artist based in Frisco Texas. As an artist, the process of making represents and resolves her internal conflicts. She is inspired by the convergence of the past and present, traditional cultural practices and modern processes, her Nigerian and Colonial/Western culture. Her work pays homage to her tribe of origin, Yoruba, whilst redefining and exploring the hybridity that exists as a result of cross-cultural influences that are prominent in our world today. She incorporates varying objects and materials such as jewelry, sculpture, wood, metal and fiber in her practice. This integration speaks to the multicultural existence of the world she lives in, the interrelationship between Nigeria and the West.
