About The Artwork

This image explores the ebb and flow of migration, and the terrible cost, on both sides of the liquid border, the imaginary line drawn right down the middle of the river that takes on two names as it flows between Texas and Mexico—the Rio Grande, or, in Spanish, El Río Bravo del Norte. Beginning with satellite images and high-resolution maps from the U.S. Geological Survey, I zoom in, pull back, exaggerate the pixels, and turn the scientific data inside out. This digital landscape reveals the eerie beauty of the topography, the unrelenting patterns of the geology, and the life-threatening challenges that face migrants as they push from Mexico into Texas. This image appears in the printed catalog for the entire series, The Liquid Border: The Rio Grande from El Paso to the Gulf of Mexico (78 pages), along with this poem, which is pasted on the back of the aluminum print: The city floats in the air, translucent. Our satellite illuminates its flows— water, and tires, and feet, and trains. This algorithm burns the slums blue, softening suburbs, defining the barren spaces . with a false-color—green. The bloody bridge of the Americas brings us down to dirt. True brown, grey, and pale white show El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, two cities, one land. Who can tell the two apart? Line and shade make imaginary lines into razor wire and glare. Hues deceive; these patterns suggest, but hide the figures walking across this ground. This aluminum print comes without a frame; it hangs about an inch off the wall. Because it is so light, it can be supported on a single nail, if you like. Shipping of the aluminum print comes directly from the artist, with a handwritten signature on the certificate of authenticity. The paper prints do come with frames, if you wish.

Starting with a Doctorate in Fine Arts from Yale, I worked in conceptual art and concrete poetry, showing in co-op galleries, The Jewish Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum in New York. At Apple, when it was primarily a computer company, I created the style guide used by their technical communication teams; I designed, edited, and wrote content for regular users, and thanks to MacPaint, started taking my artistic practice into the digital realm. I work in multiple applications on a Mac, exploring NASA photographs of the terrain that migrants go through coming to the United States, blended with topographic maps, vector analyses, and color studies. I explore mysterious landscapes, as when the Visitors arrive in Manhattan or New Mexico, strange alien shapes that enter into familiar cities or forests.
