From his early childhood, Bart Swaan (born 1981 in Wilrijk, lives and works in Essen) has had two passions: drawing and mountains. Since the age of 6 he has been traveling with his parents into the mountains to walk and climb. Since a long time, he has also drawn everything that is loose and stuck. A few years ago he started to bring these loves together in monumental black and white drawings that he makes based on his memories of walks and climbs. He focuses on both the landscape and the company with which he climbs. He creates the drawings in one go on a large format in charcoal and oil chalk. "Making a drawing is like a trip through the mountains," Bart writes about his work. “There are difficulties that must be overcome and in the beginning you do not know what the view will be like at the peak. Whatever the end point may look like, the experience is priceless and asks for another goal that has already begun during the tour. ”He captures the mountains and snow landscapes in a multitude of textures that strongly emphasize the capricious nature of the environment. He finds inspiration for this in the paintings of Frans Hals; in particular the paintings in which it captured the pub life and related folk scenes. Hals has a fairly nervous, rough brush stroke that can go in different directions. That quality is reflected in Bart's drawings. The moving lines and the sharp contrasts from time to time evoke the changing light and weather conditions in the mountains: the beauty of it that can be overwhelmed, but is not without risk for those who seek it out.
