Sonya G. Peters was born in Canada, and worked as a graphic designer after completing a Diploma of Applied Arts in Illustration at Sheridan College, Ontario before moving to Australia in 1991. Following the move Sonya has since completed a Bachelor of Fine Art with First class Honours and a Master of Visual Art at Queensland College of Art, Gold Coast, where she is now teaching and commencing study in a Doctorate of Visual Arts.

As a visual artist the creative process is both a visual and tactile experienceto draw is to touch/feel and to see is to touch/feel. I cannot separate the act of seeing from the act of touching from the act of drawing, for me they become one and the samean embodied experience. I have found in my arts practice that this tactile experience of drawing/mark-making is further developed through the sometimes-unorthodox use of materials that continue to engage the senses. It is precisely this interrelationship between vision and touch from an embodied perspective that explores ideas of memory, myth and perception.
