What are the underlying cultural norms that contribute to misogyny in a society? And what – if anything - can be done to transform them? Inspired primarily by photographs from the New York Times and the Boston Globe, my drawings in gunpowder and graphite are testament to recent history. Focusing on small details in difficult imagery, I aim to distill, encapsulate, and visually present complex issues of war with equanimity. As an American experiencing wartime conflict from a distance, my work is an attempt to comprehend and humanize the tragedy of these mediated events. I use gunpowder as a metaphor for the human potential to create rather than destroy, and my work elucidates the potential for peace. Even in images of conflict, I represent the emotions common to divided sides, demonstrating the possibility for tolerant understanding and nonviolent resolution. I have most recently expanded to installation work. Two new projects, "Inventory" and "a count," explore the conditions of war from differing perspectives.
