About The Artwork

This drawing is part of the perlin noise series, where I developed a new program that creates a 'random' shape according to a set number of sides, which is then iterated through cycles using Perlin noise, a seemingly natural random factor created in the 90's by Mr Perlin. The drawing is a nod to the first computer and programming artists in the 60's, in particular DP Henry, who used analog computers to create similar artwork. Each of the machine drawing is created using my handcrafted machine and bespoke code, which which I explore the mediation of drawing through computation. Drawings are created using pigment ink pens on acid free paper.

Damien Borowik makes handcrafted machines and uses them as creative tools to draw. With a strong emphasis in using unpredictability and chance in his work, Borowik explores the aleatoric mark-making qualities of the machines through automation and mediation. Currently, he controls the machines to create abstract drawing such as Expanding Squares and line studies, or deconstruct landscapes and cityscapes in figurative series. In 2017, the Victoria and Albert Museum acquired 6 machine drawings form the artist to be part of their permanent collection. This September 2017, 'Cherry Blossom and Mountains' was also shortlisted in the Lumen Prize as part of this year's Global Digital Art Awards in the Still Image category. In December 2017, Damien was also invited as guest artist to showcase artworks and machines at The London Illustration Fair at the Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf. Collections include Victoria & Albert Museum, Christian Dior Couture. Clients list include BBC Worldwide, Samsung Electronics, Southbank Centre.
