"Baby" is part of the portrait series that i'm currently working on. Reference photos of the paintings/drawings are found from instagram: they are random selfies of ordinary people, fashion photographs, documentary photography - and the social background of the people varies widely from a refugee to those of us more fortunate then others. Some photographs come from real situations and some do not: fashion photographs, for example, can be made up and well polished. Some photographs are taken on-the-go as snapshots. My goal in this series is to bring all these people together in a same space, equal to one another, taken away from their surroundings and social status. Who comes from where and from what conditions, is something that can only be quessed. It's up to the viewer to ask themselves how am i reading this person or a picture. And up to me as an artist to maby even lead that thought with the usage of color and space. Interesting thing about social media selfies, documentary shots and fashion photographs is, that each use the same visual language. What are we actually referring to, or trying to say, when a high fashion model appears in quite similar pose and look as a lonely child in a refugee camp? And do selfies, or posing for a photographer in deserted town, actually bring little moments of light?

Finland
Born 1982 Turku, Finland I'm interested about the space between real and surreal. I add elements of photography to my paintings via photorealistic drawing, combined to expressive painting to emphasize the existential question of surreal in anything we see as real and existing. I also work as an photography teacher, and work with various cultural projects
