A fight among brothers in the depth of the forest. Nature's little strangers. Baobabs are unusual trees, their very structure is unnerving, contradicting everything our eyes are used to see. Instead of sprouting branches that tapper towards the ends, becoming line-like and delicate, those little beasts grow branches that bulge, so you can not predict when they're about to end. They coil, they protrude, they knot around themselves. Instead of staying hidden in the ground, their roots tend to show, rivaling and overpowering in massivity their branches. Another uncanny attribute is the unusual balance between leaves and trunk, that overthrows what seems a constant among trees, thus the texture is significantly different, smooth wooden surfaces, cracks in the bark, shiny little regular leaves, nothing of the fluttery foliage we associate with a forest. Ink was the obvious choice therefore, and so was the spare use of a lighter wash for the leaves

Maria I. Oancea is an artist who simply adores playing with the sensorial quality of art. Suggestion is both her mastery and one of her greater joys. Another is the human form, the organic lines and structures of motion and of life. The irresistible irrepressible feeling of life pulsating within. Her works dwell on the fragile and voluptuous tension between content and form. Her main purpose, wish and challenge is to test art's possibility to produce enthusiasm - a brutal and tempestuous desire to live. It is therefore a Dionysian art that captures and merges and draws on one aspect that is Apollonian: the figurative. Maria I. Oancea's works and style have been associated with those of Francis Bacon, Toulouse Lautrec and Ernst Kirchner, influences that she finds extremely honoring.
