About The Artwork

The works in the Biovolve series deal with the psychology of sexuality and the biological, physiological evolution of our genderness. As we have physically developed both as individuals and as a species we have also sexually evolved. The work explores the essential battles that rage between the sexes and within the sexes. The imagery delves into a world, not unlike our own, where sex is a weapon. The captured are held prisoner, tortured, or left for dead while the triumphant bask in the light of instantaneous pleasure. To create these works I use a translucent vellum coated with turpentine. I draw into this slick surface with a wax or oil based pencil. Once the initial image is drawn I use my fingers to shape and refine the image. A second layer containing just the color is then placed behind the original drawing. The top layer diffuses the light giving the color a muted, subdued look. The materials are very important for both their visual effect and their symbolism. I use the physical forms of the sexually and organically oriented images to act as a metaphor for the psychological. Sex is as much psychological as it is physical and the duality is what interests me. Investigating the multiple personalities of our sexuality reveals the strengths, insecurities, and unrealized fantasies that exist within us all. We find the taboos of society are not as unattainable as we might at first think and nothing is unavailable.

BIO - Vincent Salvati is a multi-media artist who uses abstraction as a language to portray his feelings, dreams, and sentimentalities. Salvati was born and raised in close proximity to New York City, which would become a big influence on his work. From an early age, the personality and hardiness of the city and its extremes made a lasting impression. Salvati began his art education at the Fashion Institute of Technology at the age of sixteen where he began to explore his abilities and refine his aesthetics. He then attended Pratt Institute where the foundation of his painting practice solidified. Salvati has always sought to have an exchange with his audience via conversation, interactivity, or collaboration. Among his many solo and group exhibitions are The Paterson Museum, George Segal Gallery at Montclair State University, The Montclair Art Museum, and his inclusion in the New Jersey Arts Annual at the New Jersey State Museum. He served for seven years on the board of directors for the Jersey City-based non-profit, Pro Arts. He received his graduate degree from William Paterson University, and currently lives and works in New Jersey.
