About The Artwork

This botanical illustration of Silybum marianum, commonly called blessed thistle or milk thistle is part of "Botanical Shadows" collection. I started this botanical illustrations in 2019. I've been adding some more artworks to the collection in 2020 and in 2021, during confinement; I guess I needed to bring some fresh nature to the studio during the pandemic. Great part of my inspiration cames from nature and with this collection I wanted to focus on the shapes of this nature. Playing with the positive and negative space, using only black ink over white paper. I wanted to forget about color, light, tones... the important here is the place it occupies in space. The result of this exercice is a minimalistic botanical illustration. A kinf of image that it's shaped agains a white wall when the sun touches the tree and we can see it's shadow on it. The theme of this illustration is a milk thistle, native to the Mediterranean region. The artwork is NOT framed. The illustration is made on 300gr Fabriano wattercolour paper. It's a quality paper with a little texture. When I think about framing the illustrations of this collection, wood frame cames to my mind; dark brown or light brown, with white space between the illustration and the frame. Each piece of "Botanical Shadows" works individually but I find that a convination of two of them (1 element and 4 element illustrations convined together) works great together

Born in 1982 in the Basque Country, I currently live and work next to the mediterranean sea, in Barcelona. I combine my artistic work with a career in a fashion industry as a Textile Graphic Designer. I often mix different techniques in my artworks; acrylic, Chinese ink, watercolors... to accomplish the textures and strength I'm looking for. The main theme of my work is nature.
