Since the early 1990s, Nelson's work has focused on creating bi and three-dimensional artworks, conceptual objects and installations, based on current sociopolitical issues. Through art he looks to better understand mankind's conflict in particular, the social and psychological implications of social tension. Toward this end, he has worked on a series of pieces that address issues of longing, fear, grief and vanity. He uses a variety of different mediums to express these feelings and tells a story known to us all but lived more deeply by some than others. From charcoal and ink to wood, metal, blood, wax, water, glass, light and photographs, materials are juxtaposed and symbolically paired.
