I love/hate carousels. They make me nauseous to look at and especially to ride. To me they are a symbol of how this life is relentless in its uncontrollable nature. Having been born in West Germany when it was still called that, and growing up near St. Louis, Missouri where I saw many Max Beckmann expressionist paintings as an impressionable girl, I have always been drawn to German expressionism. It helped me digest a lot of the angst I had growing up with a German mother and the damage the war had on our family.
