About The Artwork

Aerial cityscape of the Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, Western Cape.
Originally built as “huurhuisies” (lease-houses) for slaves on the slopes of Signal Hill from 1763 onwards, these dwellings were all painted white until emancipation in 1834. The people of the Bo-Kaap painted the facades of their homes in bright colours to celebrate the abolition of slavery and their new-found freedom. Aside from including a few vehicles, I chose not to add any other form of activity — acknowledging the stark and solemn history of the area, despite the gaiety its colours represent.
