About The Artwork

I am interested in a balance between two modes of thinking. One mode is linear and rational and is concerned with formal constructions like the lattice pattern in this picture. The other mode is intuitive and right brained and in this work is represented by an intuitive division of space and the fluid pattern of spheres. I see the circle and the square as representing these two modes. They are also classical symbols for time, the circle and space, the square. We still use the circle to mark time and use the grid to divide the land and design our cities and homes. The grid can also be associated with infinity because as a pattern it can be extended without end, at least conceptually. The sphere, or in this case spheres, are associated with timelessness. Think of the pattern of rain drops on water. It is a pattern which constantly changes and always remains the same.

I am a 61 year old artist who has been making art for most of my life. At age 14 I took my first mechanical drawing class and began using mechanical tools to make art almost at once and I continue to use mechanical drawing in my art to the present day. After High School I pursued a degree in Architecture with a minor in Fine Art thinking that I could make a living as an architect and support my art. Instead art became too important and I couldn’t bring myself to work in an architectural office. I then thought I might support my art by teaching. I went back to school and got an MA in The History of Art, focusing on geometry in South Asian temple architecture. After graduation my need to keep making art continued to interfere with my ability to hold even a part time teaching job. In the mid to late 2000’s I was able to build my own house and studio where I keep making art which is all I have ever really needed.
