Deer in the Snow (Birch Trees) Drawing

I drew this in 1983 when I was in the card business in Minneapolis. I drew my designs at an antique trestle table in the living room of our bungalow, printed them at a small printers' shop nearby, and sold them at department stores and shops from Lake Minnetonka to Stillwater. I didn't go to art school, but instead learned my style from looking at art by black and white masters like Francis Lee Jaques, Reginald Marsh, and John Sloan. Working for magazines like Gourmet, Rolling Stone, the Atlantic, and Spy moved me in a very different direction stylistically where I learned from different masters: Ronald Searle, Ben Shahn, Brad Holland, Saul Steinberg. It was like moving from orchestral music to jazz solo, where the white spaces and improvisations, the lack of explicit detail, engage the eye. Same artist, different decades, different audience. I'm a bit amazed at the work I did then.
