About The Artwork

Essentials is a drawing belonging to the series entitled Intimates. This body of work explores the details of everyday garments and emphasizes specific details which play on the alluring idea of what is seen, and what is hidden. The use of women’s undergarments represents everything women do to be their most courageous and confident selves and questions how the novelty of delicate garments can change one’s self-esteem. Hidden from an outsider’s gaze, self-empowerment often starts from within. A woman’s choice of intimates expresses guilt-free self-admiration, and the social ideologies of beauty become immaterial, and an individual’s boldness and radiance that is often vacant, shines through. This drawing acts as a reminder for self-care, to do something, no matter how small, that makes oneself feel confident and happy.

Originally I started college in an interior design program and later switched to the Fine Arts program at Georgian College in Barrie Ontario. After graduating, I transferred to NSCAD University in Halifax Nova Scotia, where I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. My interest in drawing fabrics started while I was in college, where I was photographing fabrics and creating large-scale collages. I fell in love with all the little details the photo was able to capture and the idea that it could never be re-created in that form again. I create my trompe-l’oeil fabric drawings by using multiple layers of coloured pencil on a wood panel surface. Leaving the wood exposed adds an additional element of organic detail, which is unique to each piece. I enjoy playing with light and shadows in my drawings, in an attempt to transform an otherwise mundane item, into a sculptural entity. I continue to exhibit regularly at exhibitions and outdoor art fairs across Toronto, where I have received several accolades for my unique drawings, and have sent many pieces to collectors located all over the world.
