ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This drawing is about a family going for a walk (and about displaced cats). When my children were small we would go for a walk with the dog. We would walk past all the houses and the kids would learn to count by telling me what the numbers were on all the letter boxes we passed. If we walked to where there were horses we would feed them (in this drawing the child is feeding the donkeys). By these donkeys there is a lady coming home who is looking in her letterbox. This is the local cat lady who feeds all the strays that get dumped in her area. This is becoming more common in semi rural areas (the dumping of pets). This lady is the cat lady who provides spaying and neutering and shelter. We need more cat people and less dumping of pets. Hence the title "Everyone Needs a Cat (or Two)'. I use water soluble mixed media: watercolour, pens, inks, acrylic and pencils on A1 sized fabriano paper for my original works. Any prints are produced with archival inks on hahnemuhle paper. Large prints and originals are framed and mounted (frames are included in the dimensions).

I consider all my work to be drawings and not paintings. I use a variety of water soluble mediums on watercolour paper, pens, pencils and brushes to draw with. I layer up my marks until I am happy with the outcome. My drawings are done primarily to amuse myself, but they do harbour consistent themes that I hold dear to my heart. Many of us live in an environment that is becoming more urban. Our families and those that we bring with us (our domestic pets and other animals that we have introduced via colonialism) are affected by traffic, gentrification, infill housing, and displacement. Some of the houses in my pictures are no longer in the real world, having been replaced by multiple townhouses. I also adore the child’s view of the world – which is often so different from our own grown up world, I try to capture a child - like view of the world in my drawings. You will find a narrative of “times gone by” in some of these works, as times are changing, and I want to capture some of the memories that make us smile. These are happy works meant to amuse and engage the viewer in their detail. Older housing, urban/suburban environments, happy memories, our domestic pets (especially cats) and how we get along together living side by side, are all a continuing narrative that my work embraces.
