The sandstorms had been raging for weeks.
Dunes were created in unusual places and landmarks were eroded in others.
The sands had been sucked up and out of the pit beneath the limestone outcropping that these two Sphynxes had been carved from.
Their foundations were giving way and their monumental status was following suit.
They began to tumble; their lion tails thrashing hysterically as their wings were disengaging.
The wisest thing to do was to co-operate, hoping this would create less damage.
The one on the right appears to have been successful and able to twist her upper body so as to lay face down and protect her eyes.
The left Lady Sphynx held herself together with her tail and managed to grip her escaping wings with her knees, as she came to rest on her friend.
Throughout this trauma, she was able to hold her hair in place.
Sphynxologists have wondered if this was the actual moment that they lost their noses.
