About The Artwork

This is an original figure painting in warm gray soft pastels, on Pastelmat. It portrays a woman seated on a stool, face turned away. White oversized shirt, long wavy hair, no pants is casual, comfortable, intimate and sexy. Her face is turned away, a deliberate, almost exaggerated turn. This leaves her emotion a mystery. Is she sad? Angry? Pensive? Content? We don't know. She doesn't want us to know. The rest is up to the viewer. Partial nude, classy, sexy, elegant. I am not big on names. If a name doesn't jump out and grab me, I keep it very basic and descriptive. This is more the case in pieces which are intentionally open-ended. Pieces whose story is the viewer's story. Accordingly, i just call this "Girl on a Stool."

Born and raised in Massachusetts, living in Denver for the past 20 years. At 17, I enrolled at the Art School at Boston University. However, weeks before I was to start, I changed my mind, and switched into their pre-med program. I spent the next 11 years studying science and medicine with little time to give to my box of art supplies that made each move with me. Finally, in my early 30's, settled with a solid career and two children, I unpacked the box. I would spend the next decade trying to make up for lost time. I have learned through books and articles, tutorials, and other artists, but mostly through lots of direct study, practice, and experimentation. I have loved the process of learning, growing, and evolving, in my art and through my art. Soft pastels were my first love, and the medium I continue to work to master. My subject is almost always people. I have always loved the emotion and depth of a human subject, and the feeling of bringing a person to life.
