Gottesanbeterin (praying mantis) Drawing

There is certainly more to a painting than just the color on top of a surface. First of all, the surface itself takes part in the process of creation. For the Praying Mantis I let nature‘s elements first work with the surface – create a history the paper had to bear. I prepared the paper with a specific painted structure and folded it in particular ways, which was then bound. The inside of the tied up bundle was filled with salty, wet sea grass while being exposed to the elements for 7 days. The surface became a history filled vessel. The delicate paper adapted scars and traces from that process and a rich patina which led me to creating the Praying Mantis, therefore, painting and process are like a prayer itself. All the lines and forms lead into one another, the multitudes of fragments become one – no end and no beginning, a mantra to get lost in.
