This work is inspired by weapons of war. Created as a statement against violence, the goal is to give the viewer a visceral reaction. The fragility of charcoal contrasts the destructive nature of a grenade.

Derek Ostrom, also known as OrrinOzArt, is a self- taught and academically trained artist who is well-versed in a variety of art forms, such as drawing, painting, and digital illustration. Ostrom's detailed charcoal drawings aim to depict the philosophy of memento mori. This is a reminder of mortality; everything must eventually die. Ostrom's goal is not to dwell on the idea of death, rather to focus on the present. Ostrom also illustrates subject matter that show strength and beauty. This is achieved through his composition and application of charcoal. Ostrom chooses to work primarily in charcoal because, while it is a fragile and primitive medium, it can create delicate, bold, and high contrast illustrations.
