About The Artwork

This drawing is mixed media using oil pastels and gouache on paper, unframed. It is a figurative work. In this drawing I try to capture the power of the mighty cliffs of Moher in Ireland as they stand rolling on into infinity with their dark and brooding presence. The light behind pushes them darkness forward, while all about them stretches out that vast expanse of wild Atlantic sea. They sit sometimes as though floating others as though consumed with tossing foam, clawing at the sky rolling out across the centuries that made them. There is a certain magic that surrounds them, for they have been there since the making of the world and will remain so long after we have all gone. A romantic notion drives me forward when painting these cliffs as though I might be drawn out of the atmosphere and thrown across the sea to stand where they stand, to be where they are, to see what they see. For me there is something cruel and savage and yet immensely beautiful about them. I draw them over and over again and never tire of it. Every morning I look forward to finding something new to discover about them. Monet painted his lily pond incessantly as did Bonnard paint his wife in the bath, so I am in good company!
