This piece is a study of the light and texture on an antique heirloom rose in order to prepare for a larger composition. The rose used for reference in this drawing was dried and added to my studio-made egg tempera wash that was then applied to the background. The linen is mounted on panel and framed with a white gallery float frame.

Birthed out of a fascination of ancient technique, my large scale botanical tapestries are a lesson in history and a record of today. After I take photos of the flower for the composition, I dry the flower, grind it into pigment, and make it into the egg tempera I will use to paint the linen. The subject lives forever in its painting, using a widely forgotten process of the Old Masters. The paint is the flower, allowing the flower to live on in its portrait.
